4 Ways we’re still walking in the footsteps of the exodus

Today is first day of Passover

Footprints in Sand

It’s amazing to see the parallels between the first exodus and our present experience.

  1. Only the blood of a lamb could save Israel’s sons from death. (Exodus 12:21-23).  Similarly, only “the Lamb that takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) can deliver you and me from death.
  2. Israel didn’t leave Egypt empty-handed, but carried out a trove of gold and silver. We haven’t left the world behind us empty-handed either. “He who did not spare His own Son…. shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32)
  3. The children of Israel were saved when their enemy was buried under the waters of the Red Sea. And we too were delivered when our enemy, our old sinful nature, was “buried…through baptism into death.” (Romans 6:4
  4. The salvation of Israel was not a once-and-for-all Red Sea rescue operation. Salvation would not be complete until Israel reached the Land of Promise. Isn’t this true for you and me as well? Jesus the Messiah said: “…but he who endures to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 10:22).

It’s was God’s plan that each child of Israel arrive safely in Canaan. But it didn’t work out that way for hundreds of thousands; “For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the LORD—to whom the LORD swore that He would not show them the land which the LORD had sworn to their fathers that He would give us, “a land flowing with milk and honey.” (Joshua 5:6).

Let this be a warning to all of us. “These things happened to them as examples and were written as warnings for us…. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall…” (1 Cor.10: 11,12). Let’s not become weary.

Let’s keep on keeping on! And we can. “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.” (Jude 24,25)

Share a story how the Lord has helped you overcome major obstacles and kept you going on your journey. It would be a great encouragement to us all.
